Before you apply to register a trade mark, please ensure that it is eligible for registration.
DOES YOUR TRADE MARK MEET THE REGISTRATION CRITERIA?
To register your trade mark, it must:
- Be capable of being represented graphically
- Be capable of distinguishing your goods or services from others
- Be distinctive
- Not be descriptive of the goods or services, or customary in current language or established practices of the trade
- Not be confusingly similar to an existing trade mark on the register
When applying to register a trade mark in Singapore, use this pre-filing checklist:
It may take about 9 months for a trade mark to be registered.
The steps below outline the process of filing an application to register a trade mark.
Step 1: Application
Your trade mark application must include:
- The name and address of the applicant
- A clear graphical representation of your trade mark
- A list of goods and/or services in relation to which you wish to register your trade mark
- A declaration of your use of or intention to use the mark
- Application fee of:
- $240 per class of goods/services
(via online filing, using only pre-approved database descriptions of goods/services), or - $341 per class of goods/services
(via online filing, including non-database descriptions of goods/services), or - $374 per class of goods/services (via manual filing)
- $240 per class of goods/services

Your application will proceed to the Examination stage. | You will be notified by the Registrar to provide the necessary information or to amend the application within a stipulated deadline. If you fail to do so, your application will be deemed never to have been made. |
Step 2: Examination
At this stage, your trade mark application will be examined to check if the mark is registrable.
Should there be any amendment to the application as directed by the examiner, you are required to submit the following to effect it:
- Amendments form: Form TM27
- Amendment fee: $40 per class (for specification amendments) or $40 per trade mark (for other amendments)
- Additional service bureau charges apply for manual filing

Your application will be published in the Trade Marks Journal. | You will receive an examination report stating the grounds for refusal and will be required to provide the necessary information or to amend the application within 4 months. Your application will be treated as withdrawn if you do not respond within the deadline. |
Step 3: Publication
If your trade mark application is acceptable for registration, it will be published in the Trade Marks Journal for public inspection for 2 months.

Your application will proceed to registration. | You will receive a copy of the notice of opposition from the opponent. The application process will be suspended pending the outcome of the opposition proceeding. |
Step 4: Registration
If your trade mark application is not opposed or if the outcome of the opposition proceeding is in your favor, you will receive a certificate of registration from IPOS. Your trade mark is granted protection for 10 years.
Forms & Fees
Where possible, you are strongly encouraged to file forms online via IP2SG. Forms that are filed online would be processed more promptly and may possibly be cheaper than manual submissions. Acceptable modes of payment can be found here. Alternative Filing Modes (additional Service Bureau charges may apply)
You may file via FormSG. We will only accept manual submissions via post/hand/courier/facsimile up till 15 June 2020. Please provide your email address and Singapore contact number in your submission so that we can provide you with the payment instructions. Payment shall be made via IP2SG’s payment platform. You can expect to receive payment instructions via email within 3 working days after we receive your submission.
Unless otherwise stated, the form shall be treated as filed only when the form, requisite fees and all attachments (if any) are received by IPOS.
